Thus semaphore is a method of telegraphy whereas pigeon post is not. ...In the 19th century, the harnessing of electricity brought about the means to transmit signals via electrical telegraph. The advent of radio in the early 1900s brought about radiotelegraphy and other forms of wireless telegraphy. In the Internet age, telegraphic means developed greatly in sophistication and ease of use, with natural language interfaces that hide the underlying code, allowing such technologies as electronic mail and instant messaging... Telegraphs as such have existed in Europe from as early as 1792, then in form of a semaphore line, or optical telegraph, that sent messages to a distant observer through line-of-sight signals. In 1837, American artist-turned inventor Samuel F. B. Morse conducted the first successful experiment with an electrical recording telegraph... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Union n 1851, the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company was organized in Rochester, New York by Hiram Sibley and others, with the goal of creating one great telegraph system with unified and efficient operations. Meanwhile, Ezra Cornell had bought back one of his bankrupt companies and renamed it the New York & Western Union Telegraph Company. Originally fierce competitors, by 1855 both groups were finally convinced that consolidation was their only alternative for progress. The merged company was named The Western Union Telegraph Company at Cornell's insistence, and Western Union was born. Western Union bought out smaller companies rapidly, and by 1860 its lines reached from the East Coast to the Mississippi River, and from the Great Lakes to the Ohio River. In 1861 it opened the first transcontinental telegraph. In 1865 it formed the Russian American Telegraph in an attempt to link America to Europe, via Alaska, into Siberia, to Moscow. (This project was abandoned in 1867.) The company enjoyed phenomenal growth during the next few years. Its capitalization rose from $385,700 in 1858 to $41 million in 1876. However it was top-heavy with stock issues, and faced growing competition from several firms, especially the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company--itself taken over by financier Jay Gould in 1875. In 1881 Gould took control of Western Union. It introduced the first stock ticker in 1866, and a standardized time service in 1870. The next year, 1871, the company introduced its money transfer service, based on its extensive telegraph network. In 1879, Western Union left the telephone business, having lost a patent lawsuit with Bell Telephone Company. As the telephone replaced the telegraph, money transfer would become its primary business. When the Dow Jones Transportation Average stock market index for the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was created in 1884, Western Union was one of the original eleven all-American companies tracked. By 1900 Western Union operated a million miles of telegraph lines and two international cables. 20th century The company continued to grow, acquiring more than 500 smaller competitors. Its monopoly power was almost complete in 1943 when it bought Postal Telegraph, Inc., its chief rival. In 1914 Western Union offered the first charge card for consumers; in 1923 it introduced teletypewriters to join its branches. Singing telegrams followed in 1933, intercity fax in 1935, and commercial intercity microwave communications in 1943. In 1958, it began offering Telex service to customers in New York City. Western Union introduced the 'Candygram' in the 1960s, a box of chocolates accompanying a telegram featured in a commercial with the rotund Don Wilson. In 1964, Western Union initiated a transcontinental microwave system to replace land lines... Western Union became the first American telecommunications corporation to maintain its own fleet of geosynchronous communication satellites, starting in 1974... Due to declining profits and mounting debts, Western Union slowly began to divest itself of telecommunications-based assets starting in the early 1980s...

"Take the ghost train from Los Mochis to Veracruz and travel cross country, coast to coast, Pacific to Atlantic. Ride the rhythm of the rails on board the Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Mexico (FNM) and the music of a journey that has now passed into history." A Radio programme was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Saturday 30 Oct, 2010, produced by Sarah Blunt, and described as "a thrilling acoustic journey across the heart of Mexico from Pacific to Atlantic coast using archive recordings to recreate a rail passenger service which no longer exists. It's now more than a decade since FNM operated its last continuous passenger service across country. Chris Watson spent a month on board the train with some of the last passengers to travel this route. As sound recordist he was part of the film crew working on a programme in the BBC TV series Great Railways Journeys. Now, in this album, the journey of the "ghost train" is recreated, evoking memories of a recent past, capturing the atmosphere, rhythms and sounds of human life, wildlife and the journey itself along the tracks of one of Mexico's greatest engineering projects.

In 1937, famed aviator Amelia Earhart attempted to fly around the world, but her plane disappeared in the Pacific ocean and she was never seen again. A new scientific study claims that her bones match the ones found on Nikumaroro island in 1940. A Pacific Spiny Lumpsucker swimming near Telegraph Cove, BC, CANADA. One of the most astounding and cryptic species hidden in the cold, dark, rich NE Pacific Ocean. This tiny fish looks like a swimming strawberry, or minuscule helicopter or zeppelin hovering and rotating back and forth. Their modified pelvic fins form a sucking disc on their bellies allowing them to "anchor" onto surfaces. Without it, I would imagine they would roll over, they have such rotund bodies! I think this is a male and is only about 3 cm long. Adult females apparently have larger and more tubercles (bumps) and are a light green colour. It is believed that females die after spawning and that the males die when finished guarding the eggs. Fellow diver Adam Taylor describes them as underwater bumble bees - highly appropriate also because they can be very territorial and he has been buzzed by them! Diet includes amphipods and isopods.Eumicrotremus orbis to 12.7 cm. Huge thanks to dive buddy Jacqui Engel for this find. ©Jackie Hildering; www.themarinedetective.ca

The American Civil War was a huge news story. If you weren’t fighting in the war, you probably knew somebody who was. Reporters all over the United States were not only racing to keep up with the war, but they also had to contend with the public’s demand for up-to-the-minute news. Just as social media and the internet have changed the way news is delivered today, there was one technological innovation that allowed the media of the time to be able to communicate and report the news faster than ever before: the telegraph. Learn more about the Civil War at PBS Learning Media http://pbslearningmedia.org/teachcivilwar For a more dramatic take on the Civil War, check out Mercy Street on PBS http://www.pbs.org/mercy-street Time Capsule is made in association with PBS Learning Media. In each video we will take a look at the past, and find out how what happened way back then made what happens in the here and now possible! __________________________________________________________________ Special Thanks to: John Powell, Sonya Gavankar and The Newseum http://www.newseum.org/ ►Subscribe: http://youtube.com/thegoodstuff ►Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thegoodstuff ►Follow us on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/goodstuffshow ►Follow us on instagram: goodstuffshow ►Like us on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/thegoodstuffshow Sign up for our mailing list: http://eepurl.com/bnSOcH __________________________________________________________________ Music by: Driftless Pony Club http://www.driftlessponyclub.com/ Jake Chudnow https://soundcloud.com/jakechudnow Image/Video Credits: German Factory, See page for author [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hartmann_Maschinenhalle_1868_%2801%29.jpg Wall Street 1867, See page for author [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wall_street_1867.jpg Six Cylinder Press, By N.
